ROGUE TRYOUT and TEAM PLACEMENT PROCESS

The Tryout & Placement Process at Rogue Cheer Athletics

At Rogue Cheer Athletics, we believe that being a part of our gym is a privilege one that is earned through hard work and maintained through dedication. Our evaluation process is designed to be more than just a skills assessment; it is a “rite of passage” that builds confidence, encourages camaraderie, and prepares our athletes to handle pressure with grace.

While we do not make cuts we take pride in finding a place for every athlete and ability level, our formal process ensures that everyone feels the importance of the spot they’ve earned on their team.

The “Every Athlete” Standard

At Rogue, we believe in continuous growth. Because of this, every athlete tries out every single year.Whether you are a brand-new face or a long-time returner, the tryout process is a fresh start. This even includes our final-year seniors; while they take a leadership role in helping teach material, they still step onto the floor to earn their placement alongside their peers. This ensures our program remains professional and that every spot on every roster is truly earned.

Senior Team Tryouts (Ages 10–18)

For our Senior program, we host a comprehensive four-day evaluation in mid-May. This structure is designed to set a professional tone for the season while ensuring every athlete is fully prepared to succeed.

  • Instructional Days (Days 1–3):Every athlete spends the first three days learning fast-paced choreography, jump sequences, and tumbling requirements. To bridge the gap between our veteran athletes and newcomers, our final-year seniors often assist in teaching the material. We keep the atmosphere high-energy and fun, incorporating games to help everyone bond.
  • The Mock Tryout (Day 3):Before the official evaluation, we run a “Mock Tryout.” This is a relaxed, supportive environment where every athlete practices the process in front of their peers. It’s a great way to shake off the jitters and build a culture of mutual encouragement.
  • Formal Evaluations (Day 4):The final day consists of closed evaluations. Athletes come in small groups of three during a scheduled time slot to perform in front of the Rogue coaching staff. We evaluate every athlete using a comprehensive score sheet that focuses on execution in dance, tumbling, and jumps, as well as showmanship, confidence, and overall performance.

Feedback & Personal Growth

We believe in transparency and growth. Once the teams are set and we are back together for our first practice, we present every athlete with a personalized envelope containing their score sheets and their original Polaroid photo from Day 1 as a keepsake.

To keep the focus on individual improvement, our judges leave their names off the score sheets, and we ask that athletes do not compare scores with one another. These sheets are provided solely as a tool for personal feedback and reflection.

Youth Team Placements

Our younger athletes participate in a 2-to-3-day “Placement” process. We mirror the instructional format of the Senior tryouts but remove the pressure of a final “performance” day.

  • Ongoing Assessment: Instead of a single final evaluation, our staff assesses every athlete consistently throughout the week. This allows us to see how they interact with teammates, how quickly they pick up new material, and their willingness to try new things.
  • Confidence Building: We still include a mock tryout for our Youth athletes. This helps them feel the excitement of a formal process in a low-stakes way, ensuring they feel proud and accomplished when they receive their team placement.

Team Selection & Reveal

Following the conclusion of evaluations, our coaching staff meets to finalize rosters. We look at skill sets, athlete chemistry, and work ethic to ensure every team is positioned for a successful and competitive season.

Team placements are officially announced on our social media platforms the evening of evaluations.
